The Trident Acetabular System from Stryker is an uncemented acetabular system which includes Crossfire polyethylene, X3 polyethylene, alumina ceramic, constrained liners, concentric and eccentric liners. The shells come in no-hole, cluster hole and multiple hole variants, hemispherical and PSL (peripheral self-locking or rim-fit) geometries and are made from hydroxyapatite coated (Purefix) porous titanium.
In the 7th UK National Joint Registry report, the Trident socket was the second most used cementless socket, usually paired with the Exeter or Accolade stems. The 5 year revision rate in this report was 2.4% (2.1 to 3.1%), which was the lowest of the uncemented acetabular components in the report.
In 2011 the Trident Acetabulum had an ODEP 5A rating.
Some authors have expressed concern about incomplete seating of the titanium -backed ceramic liner, possibly because of deformation of the shell when inserted into underreamed bone (1). In 2008, some Trident shells were recalled because of concerns over manufacturing residues. A further MHRA alert in 2009 reported squeaking from incorrectly inserted ceramic liners and emphasized the differences in techniques for reaming the acetabulum for PSL and hemispherical shells.
A Tritanium porous titanium version of the shell is also available.
