From Which Medical Device
The TriboFit is an unusual socket made of a semi-flexible translucent material which is highly hydrophilic and which therefore maintains a layer of fluid around the femoral head. It is said to be associated with almost no wear as there is no physical contact between components. The associated short video shows the implant and a femoral head placed into a wet acetabulum.
The material is a polycarbonate urethane, and is slightly flexible. Fixation is achieved with a press-fit into an acetabular shell or in some instances directly into the acetabulum following reaming. In the elderly population after hip fracture, this could be a way of using a large head and preventing acetabular pain.
TriboFit is distributed by JRI Orthopaedics in the United Kingdom.
