The Medial Rotation Knee differs from other contemporary knee designs by having a geometry which includes a spherical medical tibial condyle and a more cylindrical lateral femoral condyle. The spherical medial condyle allows rotation in flexion, whilst the smaller cylindrical lateral condyle acts to stabilise the knee and control rotation.
The patello-femoral articulation acts to constantly lateralise the patella as it is displaced laterally relative to the midline of the femoral component.
Hossain et al reported better flexion and functional outcome scores in the Medial Rotation Knee compared with the PFC in a study of 82 patients (1).
The device had the lowest revision rates of all total knee devices in the 9th National Joint Registry report of England and Wales in 2012. The revision rate at 5 years was 1.14% (0.80% to 1.62%), for revisions including those for infection compared with 1.72% for the PFC knee, the market leader.
