From Which Medical Device
This absorbable gelatin sponge is commonly used for aiding wound haemostasis during orthopaedic and other surgery but is also used extensively as an embolic agent in Interventional Radiology. The embolic effects are temporary. It is also used to plug PTC tracts to prevent bile leakage on drain removal. It can be cut into very small pieces for catheter injection or can be mixed with contrast into a 'gelfoam slurry' then injected for rapid embolisation.
