This is the technique I teach for those who are not so confident with their ultrasound guidance technique or where access may be difficult. The 22g needle in microintroducer sets may well be less traumatic than other larger needles. The disadvantage is that the needle is much more flexible and doesnt always go where you intend! Its possible to use a larger needle such as 20g and then pass the 0.018 wire through that.
Note that there are in fact two ultrasound machines in the room ( I am not looking at the blue screen!)
Kit available for this includes the Neff set (Cook) and Skater set (Angiotech) amongst many others. I now prefer the skater set as the wire is more robust and kink resistant.
