From Which Medical Device
The ReCap hip resurfacing from Biomet has the following design features: a titanium porous coated socket, with or without hydroxyapatite coating; anti-rotation fins on the socket to enhance stability; a thinner acetabular component with the aim of removing less bone than other systems; a 0.5mm cement mantle on the femoral side; a grit blasted finish on the inside of the femoral component; and a fluted femoral stem. Like the Birmingham hip resurfacing, the components are made from as-cast cobalt chrome which has a high carbide content. Titanium powder (Ti 6AL 4V) is sprayed onto the back of the socket without heat treatment.
RSA studies have shown minimal migration of the device at two years (1). A clinical trial appears to be ongoing in the USA.
The device was the fifth most implanted in the England and Wales National Joint Registry in 2008, with 6% of the market, and has a UK ODEP 3A rating. In 2010, the Australian Joint Registry reported a 3.6% (1.6 to 7.9) revision rate at 1 year and a 6.0% (3.2 to 11.4) revision rate at 3 years, compared to 1.5% and 2.5% respectively for the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing and 3.4% and 6.1% respectively for the ASR.
