Oxinium is the trade name for a bearing material manufactured by Smith and Nephew and available in the Journey and Genesis II knees, and Smith and Nephew hip prostheses. When combined with XLPE (Smith and Nephew's cross linked polyethylene) it is known as VERILAST technology.
The material itself consists of a zirconium alloy metal substrate which transitions into a ceramic zirconium oxide outer surface.
The material is extremely abrasion resistant and has a low coefficient of friction when articulating with UHMWPE. It is less brittle than ceramics.
The fact that it has an undetectable nickel content may make zirconium implants suitable for patients with nickel sensitivity.
