This device is designed for malignant ureteral obstruction procedures. A triple layered membrane prevents the risk of tumour ingrowth and reduces encrustation.
We have had good success using this stent in malignant ureteric strictures where the usual plastic JJ stents have failed. Ureters usually dilate around JJ stents allowing most of the drainage to be around the stent rather than throught the small lumen. In malignant conditions the tumour does not allow this and compresses the stent causing ultimately failure. These stents have good radial force due to the double layer of nitinol and a large lumen allowing god drainage in malignancy. Stent failure is most likely to occur due to tumour overgrowth at the ends of the stent. Overstenting helps prevent this.
In theory this stent is not removable but the reality is that it can be grasped cystoscopically and carefully removed. This is off label and not advised by the manufacturer.
We find this stent most useful in malignant conditions.
The alternative is the memokath stent which is a variant on the nitinol theme.
