Gelrin C is a biodegradable implant which helps with the growth of articular cartilage in damaged knee joints. The implant is a hydrogel matrix of polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEG-DA) and denatured fibrinogen.
After microfracture of the underlying bone, GelrinC is implanted into the defect and exposed to ultraviolet light which converts the liquid into a soft, elastomeric hydrogel implant. The product permits the migration of cells involved in tissue repair, degrading over time as new tissue moves into the damaged area. It than encourages the growth of high-quality cartilage that fits tightly with surrounding cartilage and underlying bone.
A clinical trial is ongoing (as at June 2013).
