Femoral stem - uncemented
From Which Medical Device
The Furlong HAC Coated Total Hip Replacement Stem is a fully HA coated titanium femoral component designed to provide a good metaphyseal fit. It has a rectangular cross section proximally, a cone shaped transition section and a distal stem. The canal is overreamed to allow space for the stem. The device was introduced in 1985 and clinical results have been excellent. The device has an ODEP 10A rating.
In the 2012 NJR report, the Furlong was the second most implanted cementless hip stem with 11% of all implantation (after the Corail with 47%), and had the lowest all cause 7 year revision rate (2.62%; CIs 2.28 to 3.00%), although the ceramic-on-polyethylene variant fared better than the ceramic-on-ceramic or metal-on-polyethylene variants. (1.82% vs 4.215 and 3.11% respectively).
