Description

From Which Medical Device

The Metha Short Hip Stem is a modular femoral stem designed for metaphyseal anchorage in the proximal femur. The curved stem has a rounded tip and sits against the dorsolateral cortex of the proximal femur. There is no collar. It varies in length from 9.75 to 12.25cm. The modularity allows the user to change offset and version (from 7.5 degrees ante- to 7.5 degrees retro-version) once the stem is implanted, although two smaller sizes are not modular. This modularity can be used to compensate for varus/valgus and rotational positioning of the stem. Early versions of the device had problems with a titanium modular neck component which failed early (1). This has since been replaced with a cobalt-chrome modular component. The device has a 12/14 taper.

This is a smaller stem than the Mayo short stem prosthesis, and as a result may require a more accurate neck osteotomy (2).

The stem is coated proximally with Plasmapore, a fine 20 micrometre layer of calcium phosphate on a microporous titanium part of the stem.

The device is intended for use with minimally invasive approaches and the OrthoPilot navigation system and is often implanted with Braun/Aesculap’s Plasmacup. The first implantation was in 2004, and to date there have been more than 15,000 implantations.

The device has an ODEP 3A rating in 2011. There are limited published results (3).
