Left ventrical assist devices
From Which Medical Device
According to the manufacturer, there is a small implantable centrifugal blood pump at the core of the HeartWare Ventricular Assist System. The pump is designed to draw blood from the left ventricle and propel it through an outflow graft connected to the patient's ascending aorta.
They say that the device is capable of generating up to 10 litres of blood flow per minute.
The system gained the CE mark in 2009 and is being rolled out in the US (as at February 2013) beginning with the 50 hospitals that participated in the central trial for the device.
