Description

From Which Medical Device

The removal of implants used for fracture fixation is an unpredictable process. Screws can be difficult to remove, the threads can become stripped and screws can fracture. The Screw Extraction Set from Synthes is designed to assist this process.

The set contains screwdriver shafts (Hex, Stardrive and cruciform) for removing intact screws, and a hollow reamer and extraction bolts to remove broken screws. There is also a set of extraction tips which can be used to remove screws with a damaged head. These have conical tips and screw anticlockwise into the remaining recess in the damaged head.

The instrumentation also includes extraction pliers and a variety of handles for the instruments, a drill suction device which allows removal of drill chips during drilling, drill bits and a soft tissue spreader device which aids minimally invasive removal of screws.

Although comprehensive, the set does not appear to contain a screwdriver or over-drilling device to remove a 7.3mm titanium screw.

Other screw removal sets from Synthes include the craniomaxillofacial (CMF) Universal Screw Removal Set and the Spine Screw Removal System.
