The ACCIS® hip system is a Ceramic Surface Engineered hard-on-hard (TiNbN-on-TiNbN) bearing, large head, resurfacing and total hip system with modular formats. The bearing surface differs from other metal-on-metal (CoCrMo-on-CoCrMo) bearings because it is Ceramic Surface Engineered with Titanium-Niobium-Nitride using Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD). The implant alloy is hi-carbon cobalt-chrome-molybdenum and the surface engineered bearing surface is TiNbN. Ceramic Surface Engineering reduces friction and corrosion of the base alloy material - CoCrMo.
Retrieval studies have shown the ceramic surface engineering remains intact in vivo without delamination, although some polar wear can occur. Patients with the device show no increase in measurable cobalt and chrome ions in the blood.
The uncemented ACCIS® socket has a plasma-sprayed titanium coating. The shape of the cup is such that press fit is obtained by equatorial oversizing, and there are two fixation fins for rotational stability. There is a cemented version intended for use where uncemented fixation is poor, or in difficult revision scenarios.
On the femoral side for total hip arthroplasty, the head is two-part modular, including a 12/14mm Ti cone adaptor with modular neck lengths.
