Dr Phil Haslam, Which Medical Device Editor-in-Chief, took a look at Merit Medical's Surfacer inside-out catheter system at the BSIR 2017 annual scientific meeting held at Birmingham's ICC (UK) in November.
The system is a novel approach to venous access from the inside-out thus restoring and preserving access in chronically occluded veins. The Surfacer® System is inserted through the femoral vein and navigated to an exit point in the right internal jugular (RIJ) vein. This approach achieves access to an occluded RIJ vein while preserving the viability of secondary central veins (see images below).
The first-in-human study which was published in Endovascular Today.
