The Fixion humeral nail is an expandable self-locking system for the fixation of humeral fractures. Inflation of the nail makes it adapt to the contours of the humeral canal and provides an alternative to interlocking screws. The nail has two variants - the classic which does not take interlocking screws, and the interlocking nail, which has proximal screws for proximal fractures, but does not need distal screws.
The nail is inflated up to a maximum of 70 Bar with saline, which engages the 4 thickened longitudinal bars in the device in the endosteal surface of the bone.
This method of fixation is said to reduce operating time, and leads to a reduced inventory of nails.
It is recommended that the nail is decompressed or removed before cremation because of the risk of explosion.
