PHIL™ (precipitating hydrophobic injectable liquid) from MicroVention Terumo is a direct competitor to ONYX liquide embolic agent from Covidien. It uses iodine based contrast bonded to the polymer to make it radio opaque rather than the Tantalum used in Onyx. It is available in three concentrations to address different clinical needs involving embolisation of low flow/high flow lesions or a need for distal/proximal penetration. It is supplied in pre-loaded syringes so no preparation is required.
The product's iodine bonded radiopacifier homogenous radiopacity means that there is no need to shake the syringes.
Like Onyx it must be used with DMSO compatible catheters such as Headway® DUO Microcatheter, Headway®17 Microcatheter, Scepter Occlusion Balloon, Progreat catheters etc.
The product is supplied with 2 pre-filled syringes, 1 containing 1ml of PHIL and one with 1ml of DMSO, allong with adaptors to connect to specific catheters.
Microvention Terumo claim it has a larger volume of precipitate per ml of embolic agent compared with 'competitor A' (which is likely to be ONYX.)
We await more experience of its use with interest to see how it compares.
