The Saddle prosthesis from Link is a device intended for reconstruction of the hip after significant bone loss in the acetabulum or periacetabular tumour resection. The device has two horns: the medial one lies within the pelvis and the lateral one lies outside. The proximal section can rotate on the fixation piece attached to a femoral component via a polyethylene bearing. Fixation to the taper of the femoral stem is enhanced by the use of grub screws. The length of the implant is adjustable.

When used for tumour reconstruction, dislocation can be reduced by using a non-absorbable support (such as the MUTARS attachment tube) passed around the top of the iliac crest.

In a series of 16 patients, Kitagawa et al described a technique for reinforcing the iliac crest when resections have been extensive.¹ Upward migration of the prosthesis has been described, but the implant often becomes stabilised by the formation of bone around it.²
