This has recently replaced our standard Cook trocar needle as we can now get the echo tip needle for less. I routinely use these 18g needles for nephrostomy as it is stiff and has a 'diamond' type non cutting tip (see pics). It gives good secure access to place a wire for PCN. The problem with all needles is visibility in some patients with 'bright' perirenal fat. The visibility of this needle tip on ultrasound is far greater than the standard needle and does make PCN and US guided drainages easier.
