Benefit of fixed or mobile bearing knee replacement depends on age

In a double blind randomised trial by Jolles et al from the University of Lausanne reported in this month’s Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, patients undergoing NexGen LPS knee replacement were randomised to either the fixed or mobile bearing variants. Assessment using gait analysis at up to 5 years demonstrated better function for mobile bearing knees in patients under 70 years, and for fixed bearing knees in patients over 70 years. Although this is a small study which requires further validation, it suggests that the choice of mobile or fixed bearing knee might depend on the age of the patient.
